Coated & Functionalized

Surface-coated diamond powders (Ni, Cu, Ti) for optimized bonding performance in resin, metal, and electroplated systems. Tailored surface treatments enhance adhesion, extend tool life, and improve thermal management.

Why Coat Diamond Powder?

In grinding and cutting tool manufacturing, the interface between diamond particles and the bond matrix is critical. Bare diamond surfaces often fail to achieve optimal adhesion, leading to premature particle pull-out, reduced tool life, and inconsistent performance. Surface coating solves this problem at the microscopic level.

By applying a thin, uniform metallic layer to each diamond particle, we fundamentally change how the diamond interacts with its surrounding bond material — whether resin, metal, or electroplated — resulting in stronger retention, better heat dissipation, and significantly longer tool life.

Our Coating Technologies

  • Nickel (Ni) Coating — creates a rough, dendritic surface that mechanically locks into resin bonds. Dramatically improves particle retention in resin bond grinding wheels, reducing premature pull-out and extending wheel life by up to 40%. Also enhances heat dissipation from the cutting zone.
  • Copper (Cu) Coating — offers excellent thermal conductivity at a lower cost than nickel. Often used as a secondary coating layer or in applications where heat management is the primary concern.
  • Titanium (Ti) Coating — forms a chemical bond with the diamond surface and alloys with metal bond matrices during sintering. Essential for metal bond tools operating at high temperatures, where bare diamond would oxidize or graphitize. The TiC interface layer acts as a protective barrier, preserving diamond integrity.
  • Chromium (Cr) Coating — similar to titanium in its carbide-forming capability, chromium provides excellent wetting in metal bond systems and is particularly effective in cobalt-based matrices commonly used in PCD and PCBN tooling.
