Diamond Powder For 3D Printing And Metal Matrix Composites
What This Process Needs To Solve
Additive manufacturing turns diamond from an abrasive into a structural filler. In a diamond–copper heat sink or a diamond–SiC wear part the diamond carries the thermal or mechanical load and the matrix holds it in place. The limiting factor is almost never the diamond itself. It is the interface between the diamond and the matrix.
Coating decides the interface
Copper and aluminium do not wet diamond, and silicon carbide does not bond to it directly. A titanium coating reacts with both sides and forms a carbide bridge, which is why our recommended grades for metal matrix work are Ti-coated. Nickel works where the matrix is a resin or a plated system instead.
Shape and size for each process route
Coarse grit in the 30–60 mesh window covers most composite work, and the shape requirement follows the process. Where a powder bed spreads the material, a more equant, near-spherical particle flows better. Where the part is infiltrated or hot-pressed, blocky crystal packs tighter and conducts better. Telling us the process route is more useful than telling us a target size.
Recommended Grades And Size Ranges
Composite grades are quoted against a target thermal conductivity or wear rate, and by coating weight as a percentage.
| Use | Recommended grade | Size range | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond–metal compositesCopper, aluminium and cobalt matrices | |||
| Heat sink and spreader filler | HDY titanium-coated monocrystalline | 30 – 40 mesh | Titanium coating wets copper and forms a carbide bridge |
| Wear-part filler | MBD series, titanium-coated option | 36 – 54 mesh | Blocky crystal, high fracture strength |
| Diamond–ceramic compositesSiC and alumina matrices | |||
| Hard-facing and armour filler | MBD series grit | 40 – 60 mesh | Tight grading, uniform coating |
| Sintered tool blanks | Ti-coated HDY coarse grit | 36 – 54 mesh | Improved matrix retention after sintering |
Coating weight is specified as a percentage and reported batch by batch. Near-spherical material is available on request for powder-bed processes.
What has to hold
