Functional Diamond

Titanium and nickel coated diamond, boron-doped and agglomerated grades, engineered for stronger holding force and bond retention in resin, metal and electroplated systems.

Titanium-coated diamond is there for heat: at sintering and grinding temperatures an uncoated particle oxidises and graphitises, and the titanium layer isolates it from that reaction while bonding it into the metal matrix. Nickel-coated diamond works mechanically: the rough, spiky layer keys into the bond and improves holding force, typically raising tool life by 20 to 35 percent against the same uncoated grade. Agglomerated diamond (HDYS) is micron diamond held in a near-spherical cluster that behaves as a single abrasive with many cutting edges and renews itself as it wears. Boron-doped diamond (HBDD) is a different material class altogether: boron in the diamond lattice turns an insulator into a p-type semiconductor while keeping the hardness and chemical inertness.

Grades And Sizes

Functional Diamond Grade And Size Range

Coated diamond is supplied from W7 and coarser. Below that the coating is a large share of the particle mass, so finer grades are quoted separately.

Coating Choice And What It Changes

Titanium, for temperature

Titanium coating is applied where the tool sees high temperature — metal-bond saw segments, blades and drills. The dense layer stops the diamond oxidising and graphitising during sintering and in the cut, and bonds the particle into the matrix so it is not lost as a loose inclusion.

Nickel, for holding force

Nickel coating is applied where the bond has to grip the particle. Electroplated nickel gives a deliberately rough layer that keys mechanically into the bond; electroless nickel (the N grade) deposits evenly in all directions so coating weight is more uniform. Weight gain is specified as 30 percent or 56 percent in both.

Agglomerated, for self-renewal

An agglomerate is a cluster of micron diamond in a binder, not a coated particle. It cuts at the cluster size while producing a finish closer to the size of the grains inside it, and releases dull surface grains to expose new edges underneath — which is what reduces dressing frequency.

FAQ

Functional Diamond Questions

How much does nickel coating add to the particle weight?
Coating is specified as a weight gain of 30 percent or 56 percent. In electroplated nickel a 30 percent grade goes from 1.00 to 1.30 and a 56 percent grade from 1.00 to 1.66. In electroless nickel the same weight gains take the particle from 1.00 to 1.42 and from 1.00 to 2.27, because the layer is uniform in all directions.
Why coat diamond at all?
Two reasons. At sintering and grinding temperature an uncoated diamond oxidises and graphitises, which reduces its performance. And in a bond, an uncoated particle is held only by surface adhesion, so it can be pulled out before it has done its work. A coating addresses both: it protects the particle from heat and gives the bond something to grip.
How much longer does a coated tool last?
Nickel coating typically improves tool life by 20 to 35 percent against the same uncoated grade. The actual figure depends on the bond, the coating weight and the working conditions, so we confirm the specification against your process rather than quoting a single number.
What is the finest grade you coat?
W7 and coarser. Below that the coating becomes a large share of the particle mass and stops behaving as a coating. Finer grades from W3 to W5 are available with electroless nickel on request and are quoted separately.
What is boron-doped diamond used for?
It is an electrode material rather than an abrasive. Boron doping makes the diamond electrically conductive while keeping its hardness and chemical inertness, so it is used for hard-to-degrade industrial wastewater treatment, electrochemical sensing of heavy metals and biomarkers, organic electrosynthesis and water electrolysis, and high-temperature or high-power device work.
