Resin Bond Diamond Soft Grinding Discs
What This Process Needs To Solve
Soft grinding discs are the flexible, resin-bonded discs used for stone refinishing: granite and marble surface polishing, floor restoration and concrete floor preparation. The abrasive layer is resin-bonded diamond grit on a flexible backing, so the disc follows an uneven floor instead of gouging it. That flexibility is what makes the grit choice the deciding variable — the disc has to cut the stone without glazing, and then leave a surface the next finer step can take out.
We supply grit from 50# to 5000#, with most production lines working between 100# and 3000#. Two families go into these discs: yellow crushed grit (RVD type, HDYR and HDHR) for the coarse stock-removal steps, and black crushed grit (RVG type, HDGR and HDGNR) plus HDG micron powder for the finishing steps.
Which grit for which step
Coarse steps (50#–120#) do the floor preparation — removing lippage, coatings and old sealer. Blocky, angular crushed grit holds in the resin and keeps cutting under load. Middle steps (120#–400#) blend the scratch pattern left by the coarse step. Fine and polishing steps (500#–3000#) run on micron powder, where a tight particle size distribution matters more than crystal shape: a stray coarse particle leaves a scratch the operator has to polish out again.
What we hold on the batch
Metal impurity is kept low so the disc does not discolour light stone. Grit is screened to a narrow band — a wide distribution means the resin holds the coarse particles and sheds the fines, so the disc stops cutting before the abrasive is actually worn out. Surface treatment is available where the customer needs extra grip from the bond.

Recommended Grit By Working Step
The bands below are the ones our stone and floor tool customers order. Sizes are given in both mesh and micron so the disc line and the powder line can be matched.
| Working step | Recommended grade | Mesh / size | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor preparation and coarse grindingGranite, marble, concrete, terrazzo | |||
| Floor prep, coating removal | HDYR / HDHR crushed grit (RVD, yellow) | 50/60 – 100/120 mesh | Blocky particles that stay in the resin under load |
| Coarse grinding | HDYR / HDHR crushed grit | 100/120 – 200/230 mesh | Blends the scratch pattern after floor prep |
| Fine grinding and polishingStone refinishing, surface renewal | |||
| Semi-finish | HDGR / HDGNR crushed grit (RVG, black) | 200/230 – 325/400 mesh | Longer disc life at the polishing steps |
| Fine grinding | HDG micron powder | W40 – W14 | Tight distribution, no stray coarse particles |
| Polishing | HDY micron powder | W7 – W3.5 | Consistent final scratch pattern |
Bands outside 50#–5000# are produced against a customer sample. Particle size distribution and metal impurity are reported on the batch certificate.
What has to hold
- Low metal impurity so light stone does not discolour
- Strong bond retention — no particle pull-out
- No scratching or cross-contamination between grit bands
- Consistent grit band, batch to batch
