Diamond Powder For Carbide And Ceramic Polishing
What This Process Needs To Solve
Tungsten carbide and engineering ceramics are hard enough to blunt most abrasives and brittle enough to chip if the abrasive cuts too aggressively. Both contain a binder too — cobalt in carbide, sintering aids in ceramic — that can be attacked chemically as well as mechanically. The powder you choose has to cut predictably without leaving sub-surface damage.
Monocrystalline for finish, polycrystalline for rate
Monocrystalline micron powder gives the cleanest, most scratch-free finish and is the default for mirror polishing seals, die bores and insert faces. Polycrystalline-like powder removes material faster, because each particle presents many small cutting edges that renew as they wear. That shortens the lapping cycle on ceramic bearing rings and structural parts.
Cobalt leaching and surface chemistry
Where the binder is cobalt, a wet process can leach cobalt from the surface and leave a porous layer that will not polish. Where this is a known problem we supply grades with a surface treatment that limits the attack, and we ask about the coolant before quoting.
Recommended Grades And Size Ranges
Carbide and ceramic work is quoted as a size ladder rather than a single grade, because each step removes the previous step’s damage.
| Use | Recommended grade | Size range | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tungsten carbide partsSeals, drawing dies, wear parts, indexable inserts | |||
| Mirror finish lapping | HDY monocrystalline micron | 0 – 1, 1 – 2, 2 – 4 µm | Regular crystal shape, no oversize tail |
| Stock removal before finishing | HDYP polycrystalline-like micron | 4 – 8, 8 – 16 µm | Many cutting edges, higher removal rate |
| Die bore and profile work | HDY monocrystalline micron | 1 – 2, 2 – 4 µm | Uniform grading keeps the bore round |
| Engineering ceramicsSiC bearings, armour ceramics, structural parts | |||
| Precision thinning | HDYP polycrystalline-like micron | 5 – 10, 8 – 16 µm | Fast stock removal on hard ceramic |
| Final polishing | HDY monocrystalline micron | 0 – 1, 1 – 2 µm | Scratch-free finish on SiC |
| Coarse lapping | HDY monocrystalline micron | 20 – 30 µm | Sets thickness before the fine steps |
Cobalt-bonded carbide is quoted with the surface-treatment option where leaching is a known issue. Send the part material, the lapping plate and the target Ra and we will recommend the ladder, not a single grade.
What has to hold
- Consistent crystal shape with no oversize particles
- Narrow particle size distribution
- Moderate cutting force to avoid chipping
- Surface treatment for cobalt-bonded carbide
- Coolant compatibility
