Diamond Grit For Electroplated Tools
What This Process Needs To Solve
Electroplating holds diamond in a nickel layer only a few tens of microns thick, so a single coarse particle standing proud of the plating will take the load, strip the nickel and ruin the tool. Electroplated products are therefore bought on oversize control and demagnetisation far more than on average size. The top cut sets the plating quality, and iron residue sets how the powder behaves in the bath.
Grading and demagnetisation
We specify electroplated grades by maximum particle size rather than by D50, and report the upper cut on the certificate. A demagnetisation step removes residual iron picked up during crushing, so the powder does not agglomerate or interfere with the plating bath. Purity and coating adhesion are the other two things our customers test on receipt.
Tool by tool
The grit window follows the tool. Dental and nail burs run in the 100#–325# range, because the bur has to cut tooth or nail without grabbing. Files and hand laps sit around 120#–240#. Plated wheels and drills for stone or glass use 80#–140#, and plated saw blades take coarse MBD grit.
Recommended Grades And Size Ranges
Electroplated grades are quoted by maximum particle size and by iron content, not by average size.
| Tool | Recommended grade | Size range | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine plated toolsDental burs, nail drills, hand files | |||
| Dental and nail burs | RVD crushed grit, demagnetised | 100# – 325# | Tight upper cut keeps the plating intact |
| Files and hand laps | RVD crushed grit | 120# – 240# | Even protrusion, consistent cut |
| Coarse plated toolsPlated wheels, drills and saw blades | |||
| Plated grinding wheels | RVD crushed grit, MBD series | 80# – 140# | Sharp crystal, strong nickel retention |
| Plated core drills | MBD series | 50# – 120# | High impact strength for drilling |
| Plated saw blades | MBD series, coarse grade | 30/35 – 60# | Blocky crystal resists pull-out |
Demagnetised and high-purity options are standard. Send the plating thickness and the tool life you need and we will set the grading window.
What has to hold
- Maximum particle size controlled, not just D50
- Demagnetised, low iron residue
- High purity for plating-bath stability
- Strong nickel adhesion on the crystal surface
- Consistent batch-to-batch grading
