Diamond abrasives are graded in two systems: mesh (number of openings per inch, written like 80/100) for coarser grit, and micron (the W-series, written like W10) for finer powder. Both describe the same thing – particle size – in different units.
Mesh Grades
Mesh numbers such as 40/100, 80/100 or 400/500 refer to the screen openings the particles pass through. Higher numbers mean finer particles. Mesh grades are used for diamond grit in saw blades, grinding wheels and bond tools: for example, MBD high-strength grit from 18/20 up to 500/600 mesh.
Micron (W-Series) Grades
The W-series states the average particle size in micrometres: W50 means around 40-50 um, W10 around 10 um, W1 around 1 um, and W0.5 / W0.1 reach into the nano range. Micron grades are used for lapping and polishing: for example, HDY monocrystalline micron powder in W50-W1.
Choosing The Right Size
- Rough grinding / stock removal: 40#-180# mesh or W50-W20
- Fine grinding / pre-polish: 180#-400# mesh or W20-W7
- Polishing: W7-W1
- Ultra-fine / mirror finish: W0.5-W0.1 (nano)
