Resin Bond Diamond Elastic Grinding Blocks
What This Process Needs To Solve
Elastic grinding blocks are the abrasive blocks that run inside the polishing line of a ceramic tile plant. They sit between the biscuit grinding stage and the final polishing stage, and they decide the surface the tile comes out with: full gloss, matt, or the deliberately uneven finish of a rustic tile. The block is a resin-bonded diamond segment with a controlled elasticity — too rigid and it skips over the tile relief, too soft and it stops cutting before the slab has passed the last head.
We supply grit from 80# to 8000#, with most lines running 320# to 5000#. The grades are the same two families used in resin soft discs: yellow crushed grit (HDY and HDYR) and black crushed grit (HDG and HDGR), with HDY micron powder at the finest end of the line.
Why particle size distribution decides the finish
A tile polishing line can run up to twenty heads, each one finer than the last, and every head has to remove the scratch pattern left by the one before it. If a batch carries a tail of coarse particles, that head leaves scratches the following heads cannot take out, and the line produces tile with visible marks. On this application we control the top cut, not only the average size.
What we hold on the batch
Angular crystal shape gives the bond more edges to grip, which is what keeps the block cutting to the end of its life instead of glazing early. Particle size distribution is screened tight, and metal impurity is kept low so the tile surface does not pick up discolouration on light-body porcelain.

Recommended Grit By Line Stage
Sizes below follow the stage of the polishing line rather than the block itself, because that is how the line is set up on the customer side.
| Line stage | Recommended grade | Mesh / size | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biscuit grinding, before the polishing lineThickness control, surface levelling | |||
| Biscuit grinding | HDYR / HDHR crushed grit (RVD, yellow) | 80/100 – 170/200 mesh | Fast stock removal without loading the block |
| Polishing, glaze and matt finishingGloss, matt and rustic surfaces | |||
| Semi-finish | HDGR crushed grit (RVG, black) | 320/400 – 800/1000 mesh | Uniform scratch pattern for the next head |
| Fine polishing | HDG micron powder | W20 – W10 | Tight distribution, no visible marks |
| Gloss finishing | HDY micron powder | W5 – W3 | Consistent gloss across the slab |
For lines running more than twenty heads we quote a matched ladder across the whole sequence rather than single sizes. Top cut and distribution are reported on the batch certificate.
What has to hold
- Tight particle size distribution with the top cut controlled
- Angular crystal shape for bond grip
- Strong bond retention through block life
- Low metal impurity for light-body porcelain
