Diamond micron powder is finely classified synthetic diamond, typically from 60 micrometres down to tens of nanometres. It is the workhorse abrasive for lapping, polishing and precision finishing of hard, brittle materials.
How It Is Made
Synthetic diamond is grown under high temperature and high pressure (HPHT), then crushed and classified into tight particle size distributions. Every batch is measured with laser particle size analysis, so the grading is consistent from batch to batch.
Main Types
- Monocrystalline micron powder (HDY, HDG, HDH) – complete or crushed single crystals with sharp cutting edges for high removal rate.
- Polycrystalline micron powder (HDYP, HDP) – self-sharpening structures for low-damage, mirror finishes.
- Nano diamond (HDYM, HDPN, HDN) – sub-micron and nano grades for the finest polishing.
The W-Series Scale
Micron powders are commonly graded in the W-series: W50 (about 40-50 um) down to W1 (about 1 um), and further to W0.5 / W0.1 for nano polishing. The finer the grade, the smoother the finish and the lower the material removal rate.
Typical Uses
Optical glass and lenses, ceramics, cemented carbide, gemstones, semiconductor wafers and precision molds. If you are polishing a hard surface to a mirror finish, diamond micron powder is almost certainly involved.
