Diamond Powder For Metal Parts Mirror Polishing
What This Process Needs To Solve
Mirror polishing is judged by what is not there: no sleeks, no orange peel, no residual scratch pattern. On stainless and alloy steel the failure mode is usually an oversized particle in the powder, or a particle that has agglomerated and behaves like a much larger one. A tight top cut is therefore the specification that matters most, and it is the number we report on the certificate.
Step down through the sizes
Mirror finishing is a ladder. Removing the previous step’s scratches only works if the next step is a genuine step down — typically a factor of two to three in size — and if every trace of the coarser powder is washed off first. Skipping a step saves one machine pass and costs a re-polish of the whole batch.
Where it is used
The same grade serves stainless steel flatware and sanitary ware, alloy steel tooling, watch cases and movements, and surgical and dental instruments. Instrument work adds a cleanliness requirement: the powder has to rinse off completely, which a well-dispersed fine micron does and a poorly graded one does not.
Recommended Grades And Size Ranges
For mirror work we quote the full size ladder, not a single grade. Tell us the substrate, the machine and the target gloss and we will set the steps.
| Stage | Recommended grade | Size range | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless and alloy steelFlatware, sanitary ware, tooling | |||
| Pre-polish | HDY monocrystalline micron | 20 – 40, 22 – 36 µm | Removes forming marks quickly |
| Semi-finish | HDY monocrystalline micron | 5 – 10, 3 – 6 µm | Steps the scratch pattern down |
| Mirror finish | HDY monocrystalline micron | 1 – 2, 0 – 2 µm | Scratch-free and rinses off cleanly |
| Precision componentsWatch parts, instruments, medical devices | |||
| Fine finish | HDY monocrystalline micron, precision grade | 2 – 4, 1 – 2 µm | Uniform cut with no oversized particle |
| Final polish | HDY monocrystalline micron | 0 – 2 µm | Highest gloss before buffing |
| Coarse stock removal | HDY monocrystalline micron | 230 – 270 mesh | Blends into abrasive-loaded media |
For mirror work we report the upper particle cut on every batch. Tell us the substrate, the machine and the target gloss level and we will set the steps.
What has to hold
- Very tight upper particle-size cut
- Uniform, predictable cutting force
- Good dispersion with no agglomerates
- Complete rinse-off for instrument work
- Batch-to-batch consistency
