Diamond Grit For Sandblasting And Shot Peening
What This Process Needs To Solve
Blasting and peening use diamond for a different reason from grinding: the particle is not cutting a chip, it is deforming a surface. Peening puts the surface layer into compressive stress to raise fatigue life; blasting textures or cleans a mould or a weld. Both want a particle that is durable and regular rather than razor-sharp, because a sharp, friable crystal fractures on impact and dusts the work area instead of transferring energy.
Fine blasting and coarse blasting
Two windows cover almost all of it. 4–8 µm fine grit is used where a controlled surface roughness or a light texture is wanted, and 36–54 mesh coarse grit where the impact has to move metal or strip a hard coating.
Shape, not just hardness
Our blasting grades are selected for regular crystal shape and even grading. If the size spread is wide the surface ends up uneven: the coarse particles dominate the profile and the fine ones only add dust. A reproducible surface roughness starts from a reproducible grit.
Recommended Grades And Size Ranges
Blasting grades are specified by size window and shape. If the requirement is a target surface roughness we quote the window that produces it.
| Process | Recommended grade | Size range | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine surface workTexturing, cleaning, light roughness control | |||
| Fine blasting and texturing | HDY monocrystalline micron, regular shape | 4 – 8 µm | Controlled roughness, low dust |
| Mould surface matting | HDY monocrystalline micron | 4 – 8, 8 – 16 µm | Even texture across the mould face |
| Coarse impact workPeening, stripping, weld preparation | |||
| Shot peening | HDY monocrystalline grit | 36 – 54 mesh | Regular shape transfers energy and resists fracture |
| Hard coating stripping | HDY monocrystalline grit | 36 – 54 mesh | Durable particle, longer media life |
We supply a sample so the parameter can be confirmed on your machine before a production order.
