Buyer Problem

What This Process Needs To Solve

Used as an additive, diamond is a functional filler rather than an abrasive. Dispersed in a water-based ceramic or polymer coating it raises scratch and wear resistance; added to a ceramic feedstock it modifies how the part machines or prints. What matters is that the powder disperses evenly and does not change the colour or the chemistry of the host material.

Colour and purity

Coating customers often specify appearance as well as performance: a light grey powder leaves a water-based coating visually unchanged, where a darker grade would tint it. Purity matters too, because an additive stays in the finished product. Metal content that would be acceptable in a lapping sludge is not acceptable in a cured coating.

Ceramic machining and printing

Ceramic filters and structural parts are finished with micron diamond before and after firing, and ceramic feedstocks for 3D printing take fine diamond as a reinforcement. Both need a narrow distribution so the part finishes evenly and no single particle shows through.

Recommended Grades And Size Ranges

Additive grades are quoted by size, colour and purity. Where a coating has an appearance requirement, tell us the host colour.

UseRecommended gradeSize rangeWhy this grade
CoatingsWater-based ceramic and polymer systems
Wear-resistant water-based coatingHDY monocrystalline micron, light grey1 – 3 µmDisperses evenly and does not tint the coating
Scratch-resistant polymer coatingHDY monocrystalline micron1 – 3 µmRaises surface hardness without clouding
Ceramic parts and feedstocksFilters, structural ceramics, ceramic printing
Ceramic filter machiningHDY monocrystalline micron2 µmNarrow distribution gives an even finish
Ceramic additive and 3D printingHDY monocrystalline micron2 µmUniform reinforcement in the feedstock
Pre-fire finishingHDY monocrystalline micron1 – 3 µmCuts green ceramic without pull-out

We can supply the lightest available fraction and a sample for a trial batch where appearance is specified.

What has to hold

  • Even dispersion in water-based systems
  • Light grey appearance
  • High purity, low metal content
  • Narrow particle size distribution
  • No agglomerates that would show as specks
